Overview

Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and the third President of the United States (1801–1809). As a brilliant political philosopher, Jefferson was chosen as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, establishing the foundational American ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. During his presidency, he orchestrated the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, doubling the size of the nation, and subsequently commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the western territory. Jefferson was a true polymath who founded the University of Virginia and designed his neoclassical plantation home, Monticello. However, his historical legacy remains deeply complex; while he eloquently championed human liberty and universal equality, he enslaved over 600 people throughout his lifetime. He died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the adoption of the Declaration.
